Stop Losing Customers Before They Even Scroll Down

Most people leave your website in seconds. Here is how to fix the top of your site so you get more phone calls and fewer hang-ups.

AI Summary

This article explains why the top section of a website is the most critical for small businesses. It highlights common mistakes like using vague headlines, hiding phone numbers, and using slow-loading banners. The advice focuses on clear communication and easy contact methods to turn visitors into customers immediately.

Look, I’m going to be blunt. Most small business websites in Brisbane are bleeding money.

I see it every single day. A local tradie or a shop owner spends thousands on a shiny new site, they’re all proud of it, but the phone isn't ringing. Why? Because the very first thing people see when they land on the page is a total mess.

In the industry, nerds call this 'above-the-fold optimization'. I call it 'not losing the sale in the first three seconds'.

Think about it. When someone's pipe bursts or they need a lawyer fast, they aren't going to sit there and read your life story. They want to know three things: Who are you? Can you solve my problem? And how do I talk to you?

If they have to scroll down to find those answers, they're gone. They’ve already clicked back to Google and called your competitor down the road.

Here is exactly what most businesses get wrong and how you can fix it to actually make some money.

This is the biggest mistake I see. You hire a designer who wants everything to look like a piece of art. They put a massive, high-resolution photo of a sunset or a generic office building right at the top.

It looks nice. But it doesn't sell.

If I’m looking for a pest controller, I don’t need to see a stock photo of a happy family in a park. I need to see a bloke in a uniform killing a spider. Or better yet, a big headline that says 'We Get Rid of Pests Today. Guaranteed.'

When your website is too focused on being 'pretty', you forget the point of having a site in the first place. You aren't running a gallery; you're running a business. Every pixel at the top of that screen needs to earn its keep. If it’s just taking up space without telling the customer why they should hire you, get rid of it.

Sometimes the problem is deeper than just a bad photo. If your whole setup feels clunky, you might need to decide if you should bulldoze your site and start fresh or just give it a quick tidy up.

I’ve lost count of how many sites I’ve visited where I had no idea what they actually did until I spent a minute digging around.

That’s a death sentence for your conversion.

You might think being 'clever' or 'vague' makes you look sophisticated. It doesn't. It makes you look confusing. If your headline is something like 'Synergising Your Future Potential', I’m out.

Tell me exactly what you do. - 'Brisbane's Most Reliable Electricians' - 'Family Law Advice You Can Trust' - 'Emergency Tree Removal in Paddington'

It’s not boring. It’s clear. And clarity makes you money.

This one drives me mental. Why on earth would you make someone hunt for your contact details?

If I’m on my phone—which most of your customers are—I want a big 'Call Now' button right at the top. I don't want to click a 'Menu' icon, then 'Contact Us', then try to copy-paste a phone number.

Your phone number should be in the top right corner. It should be big. It should be a different colour. And it should be 'click-to-call' so I can just tap it and start talking to you.

If you make it hard for people to give you money, they won't. Simple as that.

You know those sliding banners? The ones that cycle through five different photos and messages?

Stop it. Right now.

They are one of the worst things you can put on your site. They’re distracting, they usually make your site load slow, and nobody sits there and watches them.

Research shows that almost nobody clicks on the second or third slide. All they do is annoy your visitors and hide your most important message. Pick your best offer, your strongest headline, and leave it there. Static. Solid. Reliable.

"Sliding banners are where good marketing goes to die—they're just a way for business owners to avoid making a tough decision about what their most important message actually is."

— Angus Smith, Founder & Marketing Director

Small business owners are often too close to their work. You want to tell everyone about your 20 years of experience, your certifications, and your five-star equipment.

That stuff matters, but not in the first five seconds.

At the top of the page, you need a 'Call to Action'. That’s just a fancy way of saying 'Tell them what to do next'.

Do you want them to call you? Get a quote? Book an inspection?

Put a button there that says exactly that. 'Get a Free Quote' or 'Book Your Service'. Don't use weak words like 'Submit' or 'Learn More'. Tell them to take the next step towards solving their problem.

Here’s a reality check: most of your customers are looking at your site on a cracked iPhone screen while they’re on their lunch break or sitting on the couch.

If your website looks great on your big office monitor but looks like a jumbled mess on a phone, you’re throwing lead after lead down the drain.

'Above the fold' on a phone is a very small space. If that space is filled with a giant logo and a 'hamburger menu' but no phone number or headline, you’ve failed.

Open your site on your phone right now. Can you see your phone number without moving your thumb? Can you tell what you do within two seconds? If not, you’ve got work to do.

People are naturally skeptical. They’ve been burnt by dodgy operators before. You need to prove you’re the real deal immediately.

I like to see a few 'trust signals' right at the top. This could be: - A 'Google 5-star' badge - Your license number if you’re a tradie - A 'Proudly Local' icon if you’re in Brisbane - A mention of how many customers you’ve helped

You don't need a whole page of testimonials at the top, just a little nudge to show you aren't a cowboy. If you find people are bouncing off your site quickly, it might be because people don't trust you yet.

If you’re a plumber, don’t try to list 50 different services at the top of your home page.

'We do hot water, blocked drains, gas fitting, leaking taps, renovations, commercial work, roofing...'

It’s too much. Focus on the main thing people call you for. You can have separate pages for the other stuff later. When you try to say everything at once, the customer hears nothing.

Honestly? You can fix most of this in an afternoon if you have access to your site.

It’s not about a total redesign. It’s about moving things around. - Move the phone number up. - Rewrite the headline so it’s clear, not clever. - Swap the stock photo for a real one of your team. - Kill the slider. - Add a big, bright button for quotes.

You’ll see the difference in your enquiry rate almost immediately. This isn't like SEO where you have to wait six months to see a result. This is about converting the people who are already visiting your site.

Think about what a single lead is worth to your business.

If you’re a builder, one lead could be worth $50k. If you’re a lawyer, it’s thousands. Even for a local florist, every missed call is a missed sale and a customer who will probably never come back.

If your website is scaring off 50% of people because the top of the page is confusing, you’re effectively doubling your marketing costs. You’re paying for traffic (either through Google Ads or your time) and then throwing half of it away.

That’s not just bad marketing. It’s a bad business decision.

Go to your website right now. Not the version you see in your head, but the actual site on your phone.

Look at it like a stranger would. Someone who is stressed, in a hurry, and just wants their problem solved.

1. Do you know what the business does in 2 seconds? 2. Can you find the phone number in 1 second? 3. Is there a clear button telling you what to do next?

If the answer to any of those is 'no', you’re losing money.
