Stop Wasting Money: Does Your Website Need a Lick of Paint or a Bulldozer?

Is your website actually making you money? We look at whether you need a quick refresh or a total redesign to get more phone calls and bookings.

AI Summary

This article breaks down the choice between a quick website refresh and a total redesign, focusing on what actually generates phone calls and sales. It warns against the 'pretty website' trap and highlights that fixing site speed and usability is more important than aesthetics.

Look, I’ve seen it a thousand times.

You’re sitting at home on a Tuesday night, you look at your business website on your phone, and you cringe. It looks like something from 2012. The photos are blurry, the text is a bit wonky, and honestly, it just feels... old.

Your first instinct is to call someone up and say, "Burn it down. I want a new one."

But before you go dropping ten grand on a shiny new site, we need to have a serious chat. Because half the time, a total redesign is a massive waste of cash. And the other half of the time, a quick 'refresh' is just putting lipstick on a pig.

Most agencies will happily take your money either way. I’m not going to do that. I want to tell you what actually moves the needle for your bank account.

Let’s keep this simple.

A refresh is like renovating your kitchen. You keep the plumbing and the walls where they are, but you swap the benchtop, paint the cupboards, and get some new handles. It looks brand new, it feels better, but the house didn't fall down in the process.

A redesign is the bulldozer. You rip the whole thing up, change the floor plan, move the front door, and start from scratch.

Which one do you need? Well, that depends on whether your current site is actually broken or if it’s just ugly.

I’ve met plenty of business owners who spend thousands making their site look 'premium' only to wonder why the phone still isn't ringing.

If your site takes six seconds to load, it doesn't matter if it was designed by a genius in Paris. People will leave before they even see your logo. If your site loads fast, you’re already ahead of half your competitors in Brisbane.

Changing the colours and fonts (a refresh) won't fix a site that’s fundamentally broken. If your customers can't find your phone number within three seconds, you don't need a refresh. You need a rethink.

This is my biggest gripe with the industry. Designers love making things look pretty. They want to win awards. They want their portfolio to look like a modern art gallery.

You? You just want to sell more hot water systems or book out your consulting calendar.

Pretty doesn't always pay the bills. I’ve seen ugly, basic websites that look like they were made in a shed absolutely smash it in terms of sales because they’re easy to use.

If you’re losing customers because your website is confusing, no amount of fancy animations or high-res videos will save you. In fact, those things usually just make the site slower and more annoying for a bloke trying to find your services on a job site with two bars of reception.

You should go for a refresh if: 1. Your site actually works well on phones already. 2. People are already calling you, but you’re embarrassed to show people the link. 3. You’ve got a new logo or brand colours and just need to match them up. 4. Your budget is tight and you need a win fast.

A refresh is great because it’s quick. You aren't messing with the 'bones' of the site, so there's less risk of Google getting grumpy and hiding you from search results.

You need a total redesign if: 1. Your site is a nightmare to use on a phone. (Seriously, if people have to 'pinch and zoom' to read your text in 2024, just kill it now). 2. It’s built on some weird, custom system that nobody knows how to update. 3. You’ve completely changed what you do. If you used to be a sparky but now you’re doing commercial solar, a few new photos won't cut it. 4. It’s just too slow to save.

"Most business owners think they need a new website when what they actually need is a better way to turn a stranger into a lead — don't let a designer talk you into a $15k build if your only problem is that your phone number is hidden."

— Angus Smith, Founder & Marketing Director

Let’s talk about money.

A refresh might cost you a couple of grand. A full redesign for a proper small business site usually starts around $5k and goes up from there depending on how much fruit you want on it.

The biggest mistake I see is people trying to find a middle ground that doesn't exist. They pay for a 'cheap' redesign from someone overseas or a mate’s nephew, and they end up with a site that looks okay but doesn't actually work.

Then they have to come to an agency like ours to fix it. Now they’ve paid twice.

If you're going to do it, do it properly. We build websites that make money because we focus on the stuff that matters: speed, clarity, and getting people to click that 'call now' button.

If someone tells you they can redesign your whole business presence in three days, run. They’re just slapping your logo on a template they’ve used for fifty other plumbers.

A good refresh should take a week or two. A proper redesign? Usually 4 to 8 weeks. Why? Because we need to actually think about your customers. We need to write words that make them want to hire you. We need to make sure Google knows where you went so you don't lose your rankings.

Before you spend a cent, do this:

1. Check your stats. If you have Google Analytics, look at how many people are leaving your site immediately. 2. Ask a stranger. Not your mum, not your wife. A stranger. Give them your phone and ask them to find your price list or book a quote. Watch them struggle. That’ll tell you more than any 'expert' report. 3. Look at your competitors. If they all look like they’re from the future and you look like you’re from the 90s, you’re losing trust before the page even loads.

Most small businesses in Brisbane don't need a 'revolutionary digital experience.' They need a website that loads fast, tells people what they do, shows they aren't cowboys, and makes it dead simple to get in touch.

If your current site can be tweaked to do that, save your money and just do a refresh. Spend the leftover cash on some decent Google Ads or a better camera for your project photos.

But if your site is a clunky, slow, confusing mess that makes you look like a one-man-band working out of a 1998 Camry, it’s time for the bulldozer.

Don't let your website be the reason you're losing jobs to the bloke down the road who isn't half as good as you, but has a better 'phone-friendly' site.
