How to Create a Simple Website for Your Trade Business

A practical, step-by-step guide for Aussie tradies to build a professional website that wins more local jobs without the technical headache.

Michael 8 February 2026

For a Brisbane tradie, your website is your digital ute—if it looks tidy and professional, customers trust you to do the job right. In today’s market, most locals will search for you on their phone before they ever pick up the phone, so having a simple, fast-loading site is the best way to turn a searcher into a lead.

Building a website can feel like a massive chore, but you don't need to be a tech genius to get it right. This guide is designed to take you from 'nothing' to 'live' using tools that are easy to manage while you're on the tools yourself.

Before You Start: The Checklist

To make this process as smooth as possible, gather these items first. It’ll save you jumping back and forth between tabs later.

  • Your ABN: You'll need this to register a .com.au domain name.
  • High-quality photos: 5-10 shots of your best work, your team, and your branded vehicle (if you have one).
  • Your Logo: A high-resolution version (PNG or SVG is best).
  • Business Details: Your service area (e.g., "Brisbane Northside to Moreton Bay"), phone number, and email.
  • Credit Card: For domain registration and hosting (usually around $15–$30 per month total).

Step 1: Choose Your Platform (The "Engine")

There are dozens of ways to build a site, but for a trade business, we recommend Squarespace or Wix.

Why? Because they are "all-in-one" platforms. You don't have to worry about separate hosting, security updates, or complex coding.

Pro Tip from Experience: If you want something that looks incredibly polished with very little effort, go with Squarespace. If you want more freedom to move elements around exactly where you want them, go with Wix. For this guide, we’ll focus on the general flow that works for both.

Step 2: Secure Your Domain Name

Your domain is your address (e.g., www.smithsplumbing.com.au).

In Australia, a .com.au is the gold standard. It tells customers—and Google—that you are a verified Australian business.

  • Go to a registrar like VentraIP or GoDaddy, or buy it directly through your website builder (Squarespace/Wix) during signup.
  • Try to keep it short. If smithsplumbing.com.au is taken, try smithsplumbingbrisbane.com.au.
  • The ABN Step: When registering a .com.au, you will be asked for your ABN. This is a legal requirement in Australia. Make sure your business name matches your ABN records.
Real observation: I've seen many tradies buy a .com (the US version) because it was $10 cheaper. Don't do it. Locals trust .com.au more, and it helps your local SEO rankings in Brisbane.

Step 3: Pick a Template (Keep it Simple!)

When you log into your builder, you’ll be overwhelmed by hundreds of templates.

Don't overthink this. Look for a category like "Professional Services" or "Construction."
  • What to look for: Large header image, clear contact button at the top, and a clean layout.
  • Screenshot Description: You should see a grid of designs. Hover over them and click "Preview." Look at how it looks on a mobile phone—most of your customers will be viewing your site while standing in their kitchen looking at a leak!

Step 4: Map Out Your Pages

A trade website only needs 4 or 5 pages to be effective. Don't make it more complicated than it needs to be.

  • Home: The "Elevator Pitch." What you do, where you do it, and why you're better than the bloke down the road.
  • Services: A list of what you offer (e.g., Hot Water Systems, Gas Fitting, Emergency Repairs).
  • Gallery/Our Work: Proof that you do a good job. People love seeing "Before and After" shots.
  • About Us: A bit about your experience. Mentioning you're a local Brisbane family business goes a long way here.
  • Contact: A simple form, your phone number, and your service area map.

Step 5: Writing Your Content (The Aussie Way)

You don't need to be a poet. Just speak plainly.

  • The Headline: Be specific. Instead of "Quality Plumbing," try "Reliable Emergency Plumbers Serving Brisbane Southside."
  • The Call to Action (CTA): Tell them what to do. "Call for a Free Quote" or "Book an Inspection Online."
  • The Trust Factor: Include your license number in the footer. In QLD, showing your QBCC license is a massive trust signal.
Note: This is where most people get stuck. They try to write too much. Keep your paragraphs short—no more than 3 sentences each. People scan; they don't read every word.

Step 6: Adding Images (Show, Don't Just Tell)

This is the most important part for a tradie site.

  • The Hero Image: This is the big photo at the top. Use a photo of your team or your van in front of a recognisable local landmark if possible.
  • Optimise for Speed: Don't upload 10MB files straight from your iPhone. Use a free tool like TinyJPG to shrink the file size before uploading. This ensures your site loads fast on 4G/5G.
  • Alt Text: When you upload an image, there’s usually a box for "Alt Text." Write something like "Plumber installing hot water system in Chermside." This helps Google understand what's in the photo.

Step 7: Setting Up the Contact Form

Your website is a lead-generation machine. If the contact form doesn't work, the site is useless.

  • Keep the form short: Name, Phone, Suburb, and a brief description of the job.
  • Test it! Send a test enquiry to make sure it actually lands in your inbox and doesn't go to spam.
  • Pro Tip: Set up an "Auto-responder" that says, "Thanks for your enquiry! We usually get back to you within 2 hours." It gives the customer peace of mind so they stop calling your competitors.

Step 8: Basic SEO (Getting Found on Google)

You want to show up when someone searches "Electrician near me."

  • Page Titles: Every page should have a title like "Blocked Drain Repairs Brisbane | [Your Business Name]."
  • Local Keywords: Mention your main suburbs (e.g., Paddington, Ashgrove, Indooroopilly) in your text.
  • Google Business Profile: This isn't technically part of your website, but you must link the two. Ensure your website URL is added to your Google Map listing.

Step 9: Mobile Review

Before you hit publish, open your site on your phone.

  • Is the "Call Now" button easy to hit with a thumb?
  • Does the text look too small?
  • Do the images load quickly?
Honestly, the interface for mobile editing in Wix can be a bit fiddly. Bear with it—it’s worth the 20 minutes of tweaking because 80% of your traffic will be mobile.

Step 10: Launch and Connect

Once you’re happy, click Publish.

  • Connect your domain name (the builder will have a step-by-step guide for this).
  • Wait about 24–48 hours for the "SSL certificate" to activate (that’s the little padlock icon in the browser).
  • Share the link on your Facebook business page.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Using Stock Photos: Everyone knows what a generic American construction worker looks like. Use your own photos—even if they aren't "perfect," they are authentic.
  • Hiding the Phone Number: Put your phone number at the very top of every page. Don't make people hunt for it.
  • Ignoring the "Footer": Put your ABN, License Number, and Service Area in the bottom area of your site. It builds instant authority.
  • Too Much Tech Talk: Your customers don't care about the technical specs of a circuit breaker; they just want to know you can fix their power safely and quickly.

Troubleshooting

  • "My images look blurry": You've likely resized a small image to be too large. Always start with a high-res photo and let the website builder scale it down.
  • "I can't find my site on Google": It takes time! It can take 1–4 weeks for a brand-new site to show up. To speed it up, submit your URL to Google Search Console.
  • "The layout looks weird on my iPad": Most builders use 'Responsive Design,' but sometimes things shift. Check your 'Tablet' view in the editor and nudge elements back into place.

Next Steps

Now that your site is live, don't just leave it to gather digital dust.

  • Google Business Profile: Ensure your new website link is on your Google Maps listing.
  • Collect Reviews: Ask every happy customer to leave a review—this is the fuel that makes your website work.
  • Update Photos: Every month, add two or three new photos of recent jobs to your gallery.

Building a site is a big win for your business. If you find yourself stuck or you'd rather spend your weekends at the Gabba than staring at a laptop, we're here to help.
