In the world of Australian retail, Instagram is no longer just a place to post pretty pictures of your products; it’s a digital shopfront that’s open 24/7. With Instagram Shopping, you can remove the friction between a customer seeing your product and making a purchase, allowing Brisbane boutiques and national brands alike to drive serious revenue directly from their feed.
Setting this up can feel like a bit of a maze, especially with Meta’s constantly evolving interface. But don't worry—we’ve set this up for dozens of local businesses, and while it’s a bit fiddly, we’ll get through it together. Grab a coffee, and let’s get your shop live.

Before You Start: The Prerequisites
Before we dive into the technical steps, let’s make sure you have your ducks in a row. To use Instagram Shopping in Australia, you must meet these requirements:
- Physical Products: You must sell physical goods. If you’re a service-based business (like a hairdresser or accountant), Instagram Shopping isn't for you just yet.
- Instagram Business Account: You can’t do this on a personal profile. If you haven't switched yet, don't worry—we'll cover that.
- Connected Facebook Page: Your Instagram must be linked to a Facebook Business Page.
- Meta Business Suite: You’ll need access to a Meta Business Account (this is the ‘umbrella’ that holds your page and Instagram together).
- An Online Store: You need a website (like Shopify, WooCommerce, or BigCommerce) where people actually checkout. Instagram doesn't handle the payment processing in Australia yet; it sends users to your site.

Step 1: Switch to a Professional Account
If you’re still using a personal Instagram account for your business, this is the first hurdle.
- Open the Instagram app on your phone and go to your profile.
- Tap the three lines (hamburger menu) in the top right corner.
- Tap Settings and privacy.
- Scroll down to Account type and tools.
- Tap Switch to professional account.
- Follow the prompts to select 'Business' (not Creator, as Business accounts have better access to shopping features).
Step 2: Connect to Your Facebook Page
This is where most people get stuck. Instagram Shopping is actually powered by Facebook's backend (Meta Business Suite). Even if you never plan on using Facebook, you need that connection.
- Go to your Instagram profile and tap Edit Profile.
- Under Public business information, tap Page.
- Choose Connect existing Page or Create Facebook Page.
- Select the page you want to link.
Step 3: Set Up Your Meta Business Suite
Now we need to head to the computer. It is much easier to manage the 'Catalog' (your inventory) on a desktop than on a phone.
- Go to business.facebook.com.
- If you haven't set up a Business Account, it will prompt you to create one. Use your official business name and your work email.
- Once inside, look for the Settings (the gear icon) and ensure both your Facebook Page and Instagram Account are listed under 'Accounts'.
Step 4: Create Your Product Catalog
Think of the Catalog as your digital warehouse. It’s a list of every product you want to sell, including prices, descriptions, and images.
- In Meta Business Suite, click on All Tools in the left sidebar.
- Find and click on Commerce Manager.
- Click + Add Catalog.
- Select Ecommerce as your catalog type and click Next.
- The Big Choice:
Step 5: Upload Your Products
If you chose the 'Manual' route in the previous step, you’ll need to add your items one by one.
- Inside Commerce Manager, go to Catalog > Items.
- Click Add Items.
- Upload a clear, square image (1024 x 1024 pixels is best).
- Enter the Title, Description, and the Website Link (the exact URL where they can buy that specific product).
- Set the price in AUD (Australian Dollars).
Step 6: Submit Your Account for Review
Once your catalog is ready and your accounts are linked, you need to ask Instagram to verify you're a legitimate shop.
- Go back to your Instagram app on your phone.
- Go to Settings and privacy > Business tools and controls.
- Tap Set up Instagram Shopping.
- Follow the steps to submit your account for review.
Step 7: Turn on Shopping Features
Once you get that glorious notification that you've been approved, you need to 'flip the switch'.
- In Instagram settings, go to Business > Shopping.
- Select the Product Catalog you want to connect to your account.
- Tap Done.
Step 8: Start Tagging Your Posts!
This is the fun part. Now, when you post a photo, you can tag products just like you tag friends.
- Create a new post as usual.
- On the screen where you write your caption, tap Tag Products.
- Tap on the product in the photo.
- Search for the product name from your catalog.
- Hit Share.

Troubleshooting Common Issues
"My account wasn't approved" This is usually due to one of three things:- You're trying to sell something Meta doesn't allow (like alcohol, tobacco, or digital products).
- Your domain isn't verified (Go to Meta Business Suite > Brand Safety > Domains to fix this).
- Your Facebook page doesn't have enough of a 'presence' (post a few times and get some followers first).

Next Steps
Setting up the shop is just the beginning. To really see results, you should:
- Create a 'Shop' Highlight: Save your product-tagged stories into a highlight on your profile so new visitors can shop immediately.
- Use High-Quality Imagery: Instagram is a visual platform. Use natural lighting and show your products 'in action' rather than just on a white background.
- Review Your Insights: Check which products are getting the most clicks in your Instagram Insights. This will tell you what your audience actually wants to buy.
