How to Create a Simple E-Commerce Store for Your Shop

A practical guide for Brisbane retail owners to move their shop online quickly and professionally using Shopify or Square.

James 8 February 2026

In today’s market, a physical shopfront in places like James St or Paddington is fantastic, but having an online presence is your insurance policy. Whether it’s a rainy day in Brisbane keeping foot traffic down or a customer wanting to browse your stock at 10 PM, an e-commerce store ensures you never miss a sale.

Moving online doesn't have to be a tech nightmare. This guide is designed to get your basic shopfront up and running without needing a degree in computer science. We’re going to focus on Shopify, as it’s the most reliable ‘all-in-one’ platform for Australian retailers, but these principles apply to Square Online as well.

Prerequisites: What you’ll need before you start

Before we dive into the clicks and buttons, gather these items to save yourself a lot of back-and-forth:
  • Your ABN: You'll need this for payment processing.
  • High-quality photos: At least one clear shot of each product against a plain background.
  • Product descriptions: Keep them short and punchy.
  • Pricing and Weight: Essential for calculating shipping at checkout.
  • A Credit Card: To sign up for the platform trial.

Step 1: Sign Up and Choose Your Store Name

Head over to Shopify.com.au. You’ll be asked for an email address and a store name. Pro tip from experience: Don't stress too much about the store name in the URL (e.g., my-cool-shop.myshopify.com). You will eventually buy a proper domain like mycoolshop.com.au, which will hide the Shopify one. Just pick something close to your business name for now. What you'll see: A series of survey questions from Shopify asking about your business size. You can skip these if you're in a hurry; they don't affect your store's functionality.

Step 2: Set Up Your Payment Gateway (The Money Part)

This is where most people get stuck, and honestly, the interface doesn't help because it asks for a lot of tax info upfront.
  • Go to Settings (bottom left corner) > Payments.
  • Click Activate Shopify Payments.
  • You will need to enter your ABN and your bank account details (where you want your sales deposited).
Australian Context: Shopify Payments is powered by Stripe and is very secure. It allows you to accept Visa, Mastercard, and Apple Pay immediately. Note: If you are a sole trader, use your personal details. If you're a Pty Ltd company, make sure the details match your ASIC registration exactly or the verification will fail. This is a common point of frustration, so double-check those digits!

Step 3: Add Your First Product

Now for the fun part. Click on Products in the left-hand menu, then Add Product.
  • Title: Be descriptive. Instead of "Blue Shirt," try "Men's Linen Button-Down - Sky Blue."
  • Description: Describe the fit and material. Mention if it's a local Brisbane brand or made in Australia—our shoppers love that.
  • Media: Drag and drop your photos here.
  • Pricing: Set your price. (You can leave the 'Compare at price' blank unless you're running a sale).
  • Inventory: Tick "Track quantity" so you don't accidentally sell something that's out of stock in your physical shop.

Step 4: Configure Your Shipping Rates

Shipping is the 'make or break' for Aussie e-commerce. If it's too expensive, people abandon their carts.
  • Go to Settings > Shipping and delivery.
  • Click Manage next to your general shipping rates.
  • Local Pickup: If you have a physical shop in Brisbane, enable 'Local Pickup'. It’s free for you and convenient for locals.
  • Standard Shipping: We recommend a flat rate (e.g., $10) or "Free shipping over $100" to keep it simple for customers.
Pro Tip: Sendle and Australia Post both have Shopify apps that can automate your label printing later on, but for today, just set up a flat rate to get moving.

Step 5: Choose a Theme and Customise Your Look

Your store needs to look like your brand, not a generic template.
  • Go to Online Store > Themes.
  • The default theme 'Dawn' is actually excellent—it’s clean, fast, and mobile-friendly.
  • Click Customise.
  • The Sidebar is your friend: On the left, you’ll see sections like 'Announcement Bar' and 'Header'. Click them to change the text and upload your logo.
Don't overthink the colours: Stick to two main colours. If your logo is green and white, use green for your buttons and keep the background white. It looks professional and is easier to read. Yes, this step is annoyingly fiddly, but it's legally required in Australia.
  • Go to Settings > Policies.
  • Click Create from template for the Refund Policy, Privacy Policy, and Terms of Service.
  • Crucial: Read through them and edit the brackets. For example, ensure your refund policy complies with Australian Consumer Law (you generally can't say "No refunds ever").

Step 7: Pick a Plan and Go Live

To actually take an order, you need to pick a plan. The 'Basic' plan is usually more than enough for most small retailers.
  • Go to Settings > Plan.
  • Enter your payment details (you won't be charged until your trial ends).
  • Go to Online Store > Preferences and disable the 'Storefront password'.
Congratulations! Your shop is officially live to the world.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Bad Lighting: Avoid taking product photos under yellow shop lights. Natural daylight near a window is your best friend.
  • Ignoring Mobile: Most of your Brisbane customers will find you via Instagram on their phones. Always check how your site looks on your own mobile device.
  • Complex Menus: Keep your navigation simple. 'Shop All', 'New Arrivals', and 'Contact' is a great start.

Troubleshooting

  • "My images look blurry": Ensure your photos are at least 1000px x 1000px. Shopify compresses them, but if they start small, they'll stay small.
  • "I can't see the 'Buy' button": Make sure you have assigned the product to the 'Online Store' sales channel in the product settings.
  • "The shipping isn't showing up at checkout": Check that you have added 'Shipping Weights' to your products. If the weight is 0kg and your shipping rates start at 0.1kg, the checkout won't know what to charge.

Next Steps

Now that you're live, the real work begins—getting people to the site! Your next steps should be:
  • Connect your Domain: Buy a .com.au domain and link it to Shopify.
  • Set up Google My Business: Ensure your Brisbane shop location links to your new online store.
  • Facebook/Instagram Shop: Sync your products so people can buy directly from your posts.
